PUNE: In a significant development in the ongoing investigation into the suspected dowry death of Vaishnavi Hagawane, a Pune court on Saturday remanded Nilesh Chavan to police custody until June 3. Chavan was apprehended by Pune police on Friday near the India-Nepal border in Uttar Pradesh’s Maharajganj district.
Authorities allege that Chavan threatened members of Vaishnavi Hagawane’s family amid the probe into her suspicious death. His arrest comes as part of a broader investigation that has drawn public attention to the serious issue of dowry-related abuse and deaths.
In court, the prosecution sought a five-day police remand, arguing the necessity of recovering crucial data from Chavan’s mobile phone. The police further informed the court that Chavan is in possession of mobile phones belonging to Vaishnavi’s husband and sister-in-law, both of whom are reportedly under scrutiny in connection with the case.
